He is the co-founder of Crazy Egg, KISSmetrics, Quick Sprout and Hello Bar. In his career he is given over 800 million profitable visitors to his class its web sites. He helps companies like Amazon, MBC, GM, HP and Viacom to grow their revenue.

Having followed his blog and webinars for even just a short time now, I have been inspired by the very informative faithful, insightful and high value information he provides to his audience. So it should seem fairly obvious why I felt I had to reach out to ask to interview him on some of my burning questions, to help to get the same results for myself and for you all too today. So that said or expert guest today is none other than Mr Neil Patel all the way from the United States of America.

So before we dive in and see what you been doing recently I don’t leave me some strategies you’re going to share with us on building a profitable list today please quickly give our listeners alone background on their shelves are you got started an internet marketing and then hard things have progressed for you to the present day?

Neil:

I got my start when I was 16. I was creating my first website which was a job board.

It didn’t succeed and the main reason being is I din’t know how to drive traffic to the website so eventually learned how to drive traffic to the website, I got good at it and then from there I decide to set up the consulting shop that focused on internet marketing which we help other companies drive more traffic to their sites But later on in life I got tired of helping other businesses so I started out creating my own products like Crazy Egg, KISSmetrics and I did the same for myself.

Shaun: Narration

OK so Neil has just told us that he started by showing other businesses how to drive traffic to their web sites. He then advanced to creating his own websites, his own products and his own online businesses. Ok where did you drive the traffic from? Where are the locations that you first went to find traffic, valuable traffic to drive to your websites?

Neil:

SEO, content marketing, paid advertising those are the main channel they were leveraging.

Shaun: Narration

So just to clarify, SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization” and it is basically the process of optimizing the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engines unpaid results, often referred to as natural organic or earned results.

Content Marketing is the art of communicating with your customers or prospects without selling to them, based on the belief that if we deliver consistent valuable information to buyers, they will reward us with loyalty and business Paid advertising as you would expect, is any type of advertising you have to pay for.

You pay the owner for Add Space and in return get use of that space. There are a few types of pad advertising including, Pay-Per-ClickPPC, Pay-Per-ImpressionPPI and Banner or Display ads.

Okay that’s great moving on to the next question… Could you please start off by explaining why this building is so important when embarking on starting an online business?

seo text on notebook woth keyboard, coffee and apple

Neil:

The highest converting channel that I’ve ever experienced is emails right? Sure you make like the email to repay it organic or content marketing social media even, but emails tend to have an extremely high car conversion rate.

That’s the main reason companies should be doing list building and that’s why I do list building, it works for almost every single industry. I’ve seen it work for teeth whitening, to internet marketing, to software, to pretty much everything!

Shaun: Narration

So we’ve learned from Neil that we should be focusing on building our email list as emails have an extremely high conversion rate.

Okay so approximately how much would it cost to set up all of the infrastructure needed to set up an online business and drive traffic to your site as you’ve described?

Neil:

It doesn’t take much money. Money is an obstacle it’s actually just time if you’re willing to learn and put in the time then you can get started you can get started for a few hundred bucks, max!

Shaun:

Okay and what are the tools you would say that you need not to get started?

Neil:

You could get like a mail chimp which is free, you need a website, you can use WordPress, again which is free right? You can use a lot of these tools which don’t cost money. Your biggest expense is like a domain name and maybe hosting.

Shaun:

And if some of our listeners on the most technical people in the world. Do you see that as being a problem or a possible obstacle?

Neil:

With WordPress it’s just plug-and-play, there’s a plug in that does most of these things for you.

Shaun:

So, for just a few hundred dollars, you could start your online business today and you don’t even have to be the most technically capable person either. So, in order to drive traffic to your site, generally, you have to have something to be able to sell people and to be able to entice them to your site.

So obviously you need some sort of product is that is that correct or would you consider did you start off the blogs?

Neil:

You can start off with Blogs, you don’t need a product to drive people to your website. It’s easier to drive traffic with a blog.

Shaun:

And so would you set up the blog and basically engage with the individuals in the niche that you’re interested in and try to give them valuable advice and almost through their trust?

Neil:

That’s Correct, yes.

Shaun:

Okay so you started off with a blog as well online, was that one of the first things you did?

Neil:

Yes

Shaun:

One of the questions that I have is, which is a very important one certain today, is the role of social media as a means of generating profitable traffic to your business – websites like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn they’re becoming more favorable and more popular as ways of trying to engage with people in the Niche that you are in, would you agree with that?

Neil:

It is, it’s a huge area and it’s a great way to engage people and get more traffic to your sites.

Shaun:

Is that one particular area that you’re concentrating on today more than anything else?

Neil:

I do I have to focus largely on social media, especially on Facebook?

Shaun:

Okay that’s great! Sales Funnels are another particular interest, do you utilize Sales funnels when you’re selling products online and if so what are the basic elements within your sales funnels?

Neil:

I do all the way from webinars, we always send people through Webinars for education, low offers, up sells into higher product offers… we have sequences for people who watch but don’t buy or almost go through but don’t like you know it’s a lot of ifs ands.

Shaun: Narration

A Sales Funnel is a marketing system aimed at creating the ideal process your customers experience as they progress from prospect, to lead, to customer, to repeat buyer.

Shaun:

So Neil, when you regularly communicate with your listeners do you generally and this is my email, do you generally offer lots of free information, free content because it’s important is it not to make sure that you constantly communicate with your list on your audience and your customers, to make sure that they stay interested?

Neil:

That’s correct and we do all that.

Shaun:

Okay that’s great! Neil I’ve got a lot of quick questions in the next round, we’re gonna call it obviously the quick fire round, So if you’re happy at all just go through these questions very quickly and ya hope you’re getting some good answers.

Ok lets go!

Why is building a list with the right type of customers so important?

Neil:

Because if you have the wrong type of customers you won’t generate sales you need targeted people.

Shaun:

Okay and there lots of ways that people generally tend to accrue a list that they can go to various websites and get some free traffic to go to their sites but they’re not necessarily the right type of customers, you really want paying customers, you want people here actually buyers them to come to your site?

Neil:

That’s correct you want buyers, very targeted!

Shaun:

Ok, Could you tell us of your biggest failure if there was one, when you started out online and how are you overcome it?

Neil:

Yeah I’ve had a lot of them but I invested a million dollars into a cloud hosting company that didn’t work out years ago and you just keep moving on I learned that you should focus on what you’re good at and not waste time on things that you’re not good at.

Shaun: Narration

A great lesson from Neil there, that we should concentrate and focus on things we are good at and not worry so much about those we’re not. This is a lesson which has cost Neil over 1 million dollars to learn in the past!

In any business the power of delegation can be extremely important in achieving success more quickly. It is important to remember that we can always outsource those tasks we cannot do ourselves to others who can. At websites such as “Fiverr” and “People-Per-Hour“, you can hire people to complete these tasks for as little as $5

Shaun:

Ok, sounds like good advice! And if you wouldn’t mind could you share two or three of the biggest hurdles you first when you started to build your mailing list online and how you overcome them?

Neil:

Yeah, inactive lists and I learned that you should be careful what you mail them, don’t mail them junk, try to mail valuable information, that the way they want to keep reading your emails.

Shaun:

Please briefly explain the concept of lead aquisition and describe the most effective ways of lead acquisition?

Neil:

Sure, lead acquisition is generating leads from the internet right so there’s many effective ways like getting traffic, collecting email, then from the email you can follow up and pitch them products or services and if they’re interested said they can fill out a lead form.

Shaun:

If you were to start building your email list again what would you do differently?

Neil:

I wouldn’t really do anything differently I would just do contact upgrades faster in which you do in content offers so, if you write a blog post on SEO tips, if they give you their email you gave me a check list of SEO tips right so more content after they read the blog post.

Shaun:

Okay so it’s about information and information to your customers?

Neil:

Correct.

Shaun:

What did you most want to know about when you first started building your list?

Neil:

How to monitise!

Shaun:

And is that monitise through your products or monetize your blog?

Neil:

Either one. I just wanted to know how to make money through a list.

Shaun:

OK in your opinion what is even the best way to monetize your blog?

Neil:

Sell products or services that people really love

Shaun: Narration

So in content offers are a key way to making money for your blog. Selling products or services which people really love and want, is extremely important. That’s great thank you.

Shaun:

How can our listeners get started building their list this week especially if they’ve never done it before?

Neil:

They can sign up for MailChimp, create some pop up there’s a lot of pop up plugins, you can just search the word press directory, connected it to your list and in the pop up just offer them free updates, or an ebook or anything that can entice him to give you their email.

Shaun:

Ok. One other question I have is, PLR’s do you think they are useful and valuable and ways for people to build a list when they’re starting out, or have you any other views on this

Neil:

What’s a PLR?

Shaun:

Private Label Rights products, so products that are already created that you can sell

Neil:

Like white labelling?

Shaun:

Yes white labelling!

Neil:

Yeah you can, there’s nothing wrong with it. I usually create my own products but yeah you can white label other peoples products as well, whatever works for you, you can test it, if it works, do more of it if it doesn’t, don’t do it.

Shaun:

And you feel that there are enough quality white label products out there and is there an issue with the saturating the market with these products?

Neil:

There’s always an issue with saturate the market but there’s a lot of good products that you could white label.

Shaun: Narration

So, the great news is that even if you don’t yet have a product to sell you can use white label or private label rights products to get started straightaway. Finding good sources for high-quality products of this type is also very important.

What tools do you think are essential for starting to build a profitable list we touched on some of them before?

Neil:

Google Analytics, MailChimp or any other e-mail provider.

Some sort of pop-up tool like OptinMonster, Hellobar, Bounce Exchange but that’s where I would get started. You don’t need too many tools.

Shaun:

OK that’s great, that’s fantastic. And who inspired you to get started with internet Marketing?

Neil:

No one really I just want to learn how to drive traffic.

Shaun:

And was that something that you always wanted to do something on the internet make money online and make money on the web right from the start?

Neil:

That’s correct

Shaun:

Okay that’s great. What is your best book or information product on list building?

Neil:

I haven’t read a really good book or list but there’s a good, conference called “Traffic and Conversion Summit” that covers a lot of the stuff plus more.

Shaun:

That was “Traffic and Conversion Summit” That’s great thank you.

What other books would you recommend that influence your thinking about obtaining profitable customers?

Neil:

I wouldn’t to say books but I read lot of blogs out there like “Digital Marketer”, “Quicksprout”, “Moz” right? All these blogs discuss things about generating in traffic or monetizing. “Copyblogger” is another good one.

Shaun:

Okay that’s great. So what does your average week look like when focusing on acquiring new customers for your business or for a client?

Neil:

I don’t really do too much time work but my average work week I don’t do much of any of this kind of stuff, my average work is just emails, meetings and phone calls.

Shaun:

Okay, when you were first starting out building a list what did your week look like can you remember?

Neil:

Just blogging and marketing and traffic generation like link building, social media marketing etc.

Shaun:

Okay that’s great. Do you have any daily rituals to stay ahead of the game?

Neil:

Just continually reading and learning more!

Shaun:

Okay, last but not least, what could go wrong when setting out to build a profitable mailing list and how do you prepare yourself for such problems?

Neil:

The biggest problem is that it doesn’t monitise or people don’t like your e-mails. You don’t worry about that, you just learn it and keep adapting and try to get better!

Shaun:

Okay, and what would you say the short term and long term goals should be for any of our beginner listeners, setting out to build a profitable list?

Neil:

The goal should be just create some sort of opt-in, that generates like a 4-5% opt-in rate.

Shaun:

That’s 4-5% optin?

Neil:

Yip, that’s a good start!

Shaun:

Okay, so basically get a product, that converts first of all, and then long term goals?

Neil:

Generate income!

Shaun:

Generate income, and in your opinion, is it possible to continue to grow, just by growing your mailing list, or is there other ways that you’ve expanded your business beyond this, I’m thinking of the present day?

Neil:

Well you can grow just by expanding your e-mail list, but yeah you can grow in many ways, so just from SEO, your list, conversion optimization, the possibilities are endless!

Shaun:

But now you’re concentrating a lot more on coaching? And seminars and webinars?

Neil:

I do webinars, yeah. A lot of them!

Shaun:

This question is slightly different, but is there a certain way you think now, that you didn’t think before you had success?

Neil:

Em, no not really, you just keep learning more and more.

Shaun:

But there’s no certain mindset that you have now that you have learned over the years that you didn’t have perhaps when you’re starting out and does that have a significant effect on the outcome?

Neil:

No, my mindset hasn’t changed.

Shaun:

Okay, so in summary, if people could take away 3 lessons from today, what do you think they would be on building their profitable list?

Neil:

Use pop-ups, create a really good offer for free to get e-mails and focus on blogging!

Shaun:

So Neil’s advice is;

1. Create a really good offer for free.

2. Use pop-ups to capture e-mail addresses.

3. Continue to concentrate on blogging.

A simple way to grow this further is to concentrate on expanding your mailing list and improving conversion optimization. This is ensuring that a larger number of people who view your offer, opt-in and provide you with their e-mail address. Okay Neil, thank you very much for being a part of this call today. It’s been very informative, very insightful In your words of wisdom, what do you think are the most important things our listeners should do right now, to get started in building their profitable list?

Neil:

Just go out there and start! If you can’t figure out the basic steps on your own you won’t be successful. That’s the easiest part.

Shaun:

Okay, that’s great advice.

Well, we’ve covered an absolute ton of stuff here today, is there anything that we’ve missed out, or not thought to ask which you’d quickly like to share with us?
